LATEST NEWS – Thanks for the Assoc. Orfee who helped us, both female dogs rescued last week from Melle and Civray pounds, have been found good homes. Well done ORFEE and a big thank you from all of us.
Sometimes you have good days and yesterday was one of those. Thanks to a member of the public, David Blake who told us there was a little bitch needing help in the Civray pound we were able to pick her up early in the morning, then after lunch a trip to the Melle pound to collect another bitch. Both these animals had been found abandoned and taken into their local Commune pounds, if not reclaimed or re-homed then sadly the next trip would have been to the local vets.
On this occassion we were working with the Association Orfee, a French organisation that work very hard to find homes for stray animals. My next port of call with the two girls was the centre of L’Absei just over an hour away, where I met up with Isabelle of Association Orfee who was taking the two dogs on their final journey, via the vets to a new foster home, their future now safely assured.
Very sadly there are still 3 dogs in the Melle pound who are not so fortunate. They have food, water and shelter but no one has come to help them so far. We will do our best but if homes cannot be found…… this sad situation happens all over France, unwanted dogs behind bars in local pounds or with the SPA.
There was one final piece of happiness to end my day. We got a call from an English couple who had taken in a couple of Border Collie males that had been found in L’Absei Forest. A couple of dog walkers came across them a few days before and it was only by the greatest luck that their own dogs sniffed them out, they were so deep in the woods; tied by their necks with plastic covered chain to a tree, these two animals had simply been left there to die, not an unusual occurence in France!
A foster home will shortly be found for these two lucky young dogs, but it would not have been such a happy ending if not for the intervention of people who care about dogs and are prepared to help. In this case it meant taking two very unhappy and starving dogs into their home, cleaning them up and treating for ticks, seeing they were fed and watered and housed in a safe environment until more permanent help could be found. Once again Orfee came to their rescue and these two very lucky Border Collie males will have a future.
It could have been so different…… saying you care about animals sometimes means more then a few euros in a charity box. It means taking responsibilty and offering the hand of help.
All the dogs rescued yesterday will need to find permanent homes. If you think you can offer one please contact Isabelle at Association Orfee, (she speaks English) asso.orfee@@laposte.net and show you care.
For details about the dogs still in the Melle pound please contact: M. Birot on 05 49 27 56 82 (sadly he speaks little English).
